Initiative to address racism on campus
Issue date: 12/10/09 Section: University Briefs
An initiative on the UW-Eau Claire campus is looking to eliminate racism among the student body. Dismantling Racism is working with faculty to make it easier to speak to students about these sensitive issues as well as hosting training seminars.
The two-day training sessions teach participants how racism began in the United States and how the racial structure is maintained. Since Dismantling Racism began in 2008, five groups have completed the seminars.
The initiative began in the College of Arts and Sciences, but has branched to all colleges, helping students and faculty. The university has been working with the Racial Equity Institute, a national organization, to help develop the tools necessary to challenge racial norms.
