The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team opened its season in St. Paul with a loss to Hamline University (Minn.). Hamline, which was also playing in its first game of the season, set the tone early as they cruised to a 4-1 victory.
Only 27 seconds into the game Hamline found the back of the net. Nine minutes later, they struck again. To cap off a dominant opening period, Hamline scored once again, taking a 3-0 lead into the second period.
In the second period, The Blugolds got on the board with a power-play goal from junior Kelli Johnson 10 minutes and 41 seconds into the period. On the goal, senior Beth Dittrich and sophomore Taylor Jenkins recorded assists. The Blugolds recorded 15 additional shots in the period - by far the most of any period for Eau Claire - but none found the back of the net. Hamline did, however, manage to add another goal late in the period to cap off the scoring.
Junior goalie Danika Porter recorded 22 saves on 26 shots in 60 minutes of play. On offense, Eau Claire shot the puck 25 times, only one less than Hamline, yet were only able to score once.
The women's hockey team will return to St. Paul on Friday to play Bethel University. The Blugolds will then return to Eau Claire for the first home game of the season against St. Thomas (Minn.) in Hobbs Ice Arena.
