Last week, the UW-Eau Claire volleyball team, ranked No. 19 in the nation, played its final home matches of the season. The team hosted WIAC foe UW-Superior on Wednesday, Oct. 21 and then hosted the Blugold Invitational over the weekend. In those five matches, the Blugolds walked away victorious four times.
"It's nice to be on a win streak," coach Kim Wudi said, "but that doesn't mean we will go in tomorrow being over-confident."
Against Superior, the Blugolds won the first three games by almost identical scores. In game one the Blugolds rallied and put the pressure on late to take a 25-17 victory. In game two the Blugolds jumped out to an early 9-1 lead en-route to another 25-17 victory. The third and final game required the Blugolds to pull away late and eventually win 25-16.
Junior Emily Zupon led the team with 15 kills as the Blugolds recorded 19 more kills than the Yellowjackets - 43 for Eau Claire, 24 for Superior. Senior Lindsey Smith returned from injury to lead the Blugolds in digs with 22. Freshman Emily Neave and Junior Amanda Lessner split the setting duties, recording 21 and 15 respectively.
In the Blugold Invitational, Eau Claire played four more matches - Viterbo University and Loras College (Iowa) on Friday, and Lawrence University and UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. The match against Viterbo was very close, but the Blugolds fell short in four games - 24-26, 23-25, 25-21 and 18-25. Eau Claire's downfall could have been their 15 errors - nine more than Viterbo.
"We missed some serves and had some calls, and some things happen at the wrong time," Wudi said. "They were very close games and could have gone either way. We just didn't make the play when we had to."
