Eau Claire committed more errors in the match against Loras - 17 - but was able to come away with a 3-0 victory. Zupon led the team with 12 kills, while Lessner and Neave each added 19 assists. Smith contributed a team high: 16 digs.
On day two of the tournament, the Blugolds opened with a 3-0 victory over Lawrence University. Eau Claire set the tone early with a dominating 25-8 victory in game one. Eau Claire chalked up at least seven kills in every game, leading to 25-14 and 25-17 victories in games two and three respectively. In the final match of the tournament, the Blugolds and Pointers traded 25-20 victories. In games three and four, however, the Blugolds won big - 25-14 and 25-12.
"I think Viterbo was the strongest team ... we saw at the tournament this weekend," Wudi said. "We tend to play relaxed when we play teams that don't have as good of hitters, but Viterbo is very well-rounded and always has three good hitters in the front row. We tend to get jumpy on defense when we have hitters to worry about."
The Blugolds returned to the courts last night for a pair of matches against Crown College (Minn.) and Northwestern College (Minn.) in St. Paul and won 3-0 and 3-0 respectively.
Eau Claire concludes its regular season this weekend in River Falls when the team competes in the UW-River Falls Trick-or-Treat Classic. The WIAC playoffs start the following week when the Blugolds host River Falls on Tuesday, Nov. 3 in McPhee.
"We're looking at a few things that River Falls does because we really only have two practices before we will see River Falls," Wudi said. "We're putting a couple things into practice here that will make us better against any team we play."
