The Women's and Gender Equity organization is celebrating the grand opening of its new center this Wednesday. The open house will be from 1 to 3 p.m. in Schofield Hall, room 34.
WAGE advocates for the welfare of those who have historically been marginalized because of their sexual and/or gender identity, according to the WAGE Web site.
The open house will provide an opportunity to tour and see what is available in the new center and learn more about WAGE, said Paula Stuettgen, WAGE director. They will also have the opportunity to meet the two graduate assistants who are the program coordinators: David Gardner and Abby Vercauteren.
"It's a great personal space for anyone who needs to use it," said David Gardner, LGBTQ program coordinator.
"During the summer a whole lot of remodeling took place in Schofield, which forced the teachers' lounge to be moved," Stuettgen said. The staff of WAGE saw this open lounge as an opportunity to move their organization to a new space and refurbish.
"It's a little hard to find," Stuettgen said," but it's very worth the look."
The new center has a lot of new features that the previous WAGE center did not have.
"The one thing that I am personally most excited about - it's been a long time in development - is what we are calling a Moms' Room," Stuettgen said. The Moms' Room will have a refrigerator and a lockable private space for moms to breast feed and change diapers and whatever else they may need the space for, she said.
It's the nicest place on campus for moms to nurse and take care of their children, Gardner said.
"I think it's a worthwhile space for all students and staff to check out when they have time," Gardner said. "LGBTQ issues are a new part of WAGE," he said. "We just want to make sure the room is open to the LGBTQ crowd [also]."
Stuettgen said the new center will also have a meeting room and a couple of computers available.
There is a sign-up sheet outside of the meeting room; the space is open to anybody wanting to use it and other organizations that would like to hold meetings there, Gardner said.
"It's a great addition to Schofield," Gardner said.
