The UW-Eau Claire football team conceded a 38-14 loss Saturday at UW-Whitewater, dropping the Blugolds to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC.
The Blugolds fell to a powerful ground attack by the Warhawks, who rushed for 402 yards - nearly 50 yards more than Eau Claire gained overall. Whitewater finished the game with 568 yards total offense, while the Blugolds finished with 353.
The Warhawks - who came into Saturday's game ranked second nationally in a d3football.com poll - dominated several other offensive categories as well: Whitewater recorded nine more first downs, held the ball nine minutes longer and performed better inside the 20 yard-line than the Blugolds did.
Senior tight end Brett Schreiner said the Blugolds were able to put together several drives against the Warhawks but simply couldn't capitalize on many of them.
"We were driving, and we just seemed to stall…." Schreiner said. "They just buckle down when they need to, and we weren't able to score in some key drives."
Eau Claire led the Warhawks in at least one major offensive category - passing. Blugold quarterback Kyle Paulson threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-37 passing, besting the 166 yards and one touchdown thrown by Whitewater quarterback Jeff Donovan. Neither quarterback threw any interceptions.
Sophomore wide receiver David Goodman led the Blugolds in receiving yards, catching four passes for 55 yards and one touchdown. Schreiner caught seven passes for 36 yards and scored the Blugolds only other touchdown.
The Blugolds' first touchdown, which came at the end of the second quarter, capped off a 10-play, 97-yard drive that began after Eau Claire recovered a Whitewater fumble. Goodman got into the end zone off a 37-yard pass from Paulson, but Whitewater blocked the point-after attempt.
Early in the second half, Paulson again connected with one of his receivers for a touchdown, this time with Schreiner on a seven-yard pass. Paulson then completed a throw to senior wide receiver Spencer Kehoe for a two-point conversion, putting the score at 17-14 and bringing the Blugolds as close to tying the game as they got all day.
