The UW-Eau Claire football team gave the students something to celebrate with a winning homecoming game against UW-Platteville.
The Blugolds were 1-3 in their previous four games and were riding a two-game losing stream coming into the weekend match.
"The win was needed for our kids," Head Coach Todd Glaser said of the 34-26 homecoming victory his team picked up Saturday at Carson Park.
The victory, which put the Blugolds at 1-2 in the WIAC and 3-3 overall this season, didn't come without some turbulence. Things didn't start well for the Blugolds, who turned the ball over on an interception just two and a half minutes into their opening drive. Platteville converted the turnover for a field goal to take a quick 3-0 lead.
But on its next possession, Eau Claire mounted an 83-yard campaign that saw senior quarterback Kyle Paulson throw for 25 yards and run for 24. Senior running back Cory Sartorelli rushed the rest of the way, including a one-yard touchdown run.
Eau Claire missed the point-after attempt, though, giving the Blugolds only a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Eau Claire's only other score during the first half came on a 21-yard touchdown pass by Paulson to senior wide receiver Nils Dillon early in the second quarter. Eau Claire punched in a two-point conversion to make up for the previous missed extra-point attempt.
Platteville had more success in the middle of the game, scoring a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter and two field goals in the third quarter to eventually take a 23-14 lead.
The Blugolds finally scored their first second-half touchdown with about two minutes left in the third quarter. Paulson connected with senior tight end Brett Schreiner on a 45-yard passing play that went for a touchdown.
