Advertisement neglects importance of fact-based reproduction education
Megan Bartos & Amber Jamelske
Issue date: 10/15/09 Section: Letters
Like many students, I was stunned to find a so-called "advertising supplement" included in the Sept. 17 issue of the Spectator entitled "I Care." This was a 12-page insert paid for by anti-choice group Human Life Alliance containing an excess of misinformation.
Propaganda like "I Care" does not limit the incidence of unplanned pregnancy and abortion - birth control and fact-based reproductive health education does. The Centers for Disease Control reported in 2008 that nearly one-third of young women in the U.S. become pregnant before age 20.
Clearly, much work needs to be done to prevent unintended pregnancy in the first place.
While Human Life Alliance pays for "advertising supplements," I am grateful that Planned Parenthood provides what UW-Eau Claire students really need: affordable birth control and health education, among other important services.
We are fortunate enough to have a Planned Parenthood clinic right in Eau Claire that can provide this basic reproductive health care to our community.

Human Life Alliance is glad to see students at UW - Eau Claire discussing issues surrounding abortion as a result of "icare...". Unfortunately, Ms. Bartos and Jamelske seem to miss the point in their letter to the editor. (Continued…)
