"Music is the art of thinking with sounds," Jules Cambarieu once said and that statement seems appropriate when applied to the up-and-coming band Passing Shadows. The band, made up of senior Jeremy Carlson (drums), senior Matt Tschann (lead vocals), junior Jeremy Jackan (guitar), senior Rob Hanson (guitar), and Zach Grewe (guitar), had an interesting start.

" We started out about a year and a half ago just jamming for fun, but we didn't really start doing anything for real until Matt, Zach and Jeremy Carlson joined," said co-founder Hanson.

The addition of a new lead vocalist, guitarist and new drummer just three months and five rehearsals ago seemed to spark something in these guys. Influenced by groups such as Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World, Ween, Guns and Roses and Primus, this mostly self-taught collection of musicians has a powerful sound that comes from more then just good amps.

"The songs are very personal. The lyrics come from my observations about the relationships between people. Not just in a boyfriend- girlfriend sense, but other relationships, too," said Hanson.

As soon as the band picked up their various instruments during rehearsal, it was impossible not to know what he was talking about. Playing fast paced, adrenaline-pumping original songs such as "He'd Send in the Army," "Amber eyes" and "Twenty- Seventh Percent Satisfied," the talented group proved that they are indeed, as a co-worker once stated, "the thinking man's metal."

But apart from the emotional lyrics, the fantastic guitar solos and the strong vocals, Jackan summed up the band's mentality as "… just a few guys having a slice of fun pie."

Passing Shadows will hold their debut performance at 9:30 p.m., Oct. 3, at the House of Rock, 422 Water St., along with Kaptivating Kate, The New Labor and Cathode Ray. The band promises awesome original songs as well as a few "surprise covers that will make people go crazy," said Tschann, from the groups that inspire them. With support, there can be no doubt that this band of talented musicians could go very far.

So ... I know these guys quite well and have been listening to them since they started. About 96 percent of this article is incorrect. I mean, "Twenty-Seventh Percent Satisfied?" Was it that hard to look at their MySpace to find out what their songs are actually called? Sad times for a good band. (Continued…)
