Blugolds still face identity crisis
Adam Benscotter
Issue date: 9/10/09 Section: Editorial/Opinion
So. What's up with the whole mascot challenge? Remember that big hullabaloo the administration made about settling the "What's a Blugold anyway?" question once and for all? Sheesh. I thought this might actually become reality. What, with all the formal calls for design submission, mascot challenge landing page and eve, what seemed to be real, a panel of judges. Here, I thought when July 15 was announced as the date all former and current Blugolds would finally have a face to go along with a name, it would happen. Well, July 15 has come and gone. We're still a "spirit that lives in all students." (Bleh). And I still have to make up some lame story about what a Blugold is because a "spirit" is lame as hell. What the deal, UWEC?

This issue has been going back and forth among students, staff and administrators since the 1960s or even earlier. Check out archived issues of The Spectator and you will see there has been at least one other contest during the last 50 years from which a winner actually was chosen. (Continued…)
