Just going for a swim
Sunday, May 3

At 1:21 a.m., two officers went to assist the Eau Claire Police Department with a man in the Chippewa River. The man was running from the city officers. In his attempt to get away, he jumped into the river next to Water Street and tried to swim across.

The officers entered Putnam Park to attempt to locate the man, who appeared to be floating. They yelled at him to swim to shore, but he did not. They continued to follow the man as a strong current carried him downriver.

The man was in the river for about 25 minutes, and when he was about 100 feet east of the Clairemont Avenue bridge, he swam to shore. Once he was out of the water, the officers placed handcuffs on the man, who seemed very tired and had trouble walking.

The man was arrested by the Eau Claire police officers for resisting/obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct.
