Senate president asks students be more critical of candidate
Tim Lauer
Issue date: 4/9/09 Section: Letters
I am writing this letter to temper the argument put forth by Aaron Brewster, a candidate for Student Body President. I strongly encourage everyone who is following Brewster's campaign to take a deeper look at his suppositions related to the University and the current student administration; many of his statements are twisted and not based on fact.
In his April 8 Flipside article entitled, "A Break from the Past," Brewster infers that we (the current student administration) have not done our jobs lobbying local legislators and throughout the state. Oppositely, the Student Senate has put together multiple strategic lobby campaigns that have yielded hundreds of contacts with local and statewide legislators surrounding funding for UWEC. Frankly, the statement from Brewster's article, "…as recently as last month, our area state representatives didn't even know the names of our Student Body President and Vice President," is a blatant lie. In fact, Vice President Charlier interned for our State Representative Smith last year and both of us have met with him many times.
Moreover, the examples that he gives related to our faulty work related to funding CASE and the FYE program are in attempt to provoke and elicit votes based distorted information. In fact, in an Academic Affairs meeting two weeks ago, Brewster praised the accomplishments and new direction that the FYE program has taken.
Perhaps the most blatantly dishonest smear that Brewster claims is that, "Recently, it was announced that there would be no guarantee that the new Davies [C]enter will be built using green technology and green construction." I can assure you that throughout the entire process that the building has been planned to be using green practices as is the standard in student union construction in today's world; moreover, the document that is the basis for the project includes the mandate that the Project be built to at least LEED Silver Standards.
As Student Body President, it is important to be able to build consensus among students, faculty and administration in order to be successful with the majority of the issues that you work on. Brewster's non-collaborative track record with the administration over his staggering seven (7) going on (8) years here will diminish the progress that the Student Senate has worked hard to make in building these relationships.

Do as your president says! Last year, you "elected" him to direct your opinion, not Student Senate.

Seriously DK? There is no question Mr. Lauer was elected as President. What does your comment even mean?

Oh, Ray. There was absolutely no question about last year's election. I mean, questions weren't even allowed under your administration, were they?

Last years elections make Zimbabwe's seem clean. Voter fraud? Ask Jacob Boer how many times he voted.
Tim Lauer doesn't speak for me. This administration has done nothing noteworthy. (Continued…)

Is someone asking me a question? I was quoted at "30" but I've been known to exaggerate my own self-worth.

I just have to laugh at the self-righteous, uneducated 2-3 people that will be critical of everything, no matter who does what. No President will make 100% of the people happy. (Continued…)

Ok, uneduated is the wrong word. What I mean to say is that your conclusions are wrong. Tim Lauer IS President and was ELECTED legitimately. Yes there were problems, but in the opinion of the elections committee, not enough to overturn the election. (Continued…)

I have to tell you, Ray, I believe that you must have some serious cajones or no sense of shame to have just read Lauer's op/ed, then call ME self-righteous. (Continued…)
