After much preparation, UW-Eau Claire students won a bid to host the Wisconsin United Residence Hall Association (WURHA) annual conference in 2010. These students began working in late October with regular meetings, outlining and finally putting together a presentation that they presented at the WURHA 2009 conference.

The presentation included a possible conference schedule with details ranging from entertainment and service-learning opportunities. In addition, students had to work out even the smaller details, such as lodging for visiting schools.

The WURHA conference is a housing conference with a little bit more learning than the name implies. Next year, delegates from different schools will come to Eau Claire to participate in many different activities. The school will host programs like ones on leadership, bettering campuses and ways to make campuses greener.

"We're bringing a lot of new ideas to the conference," said sophomore Emma Brennan, who was one of the students that presented the bid at the 2009 conference.

Some of these new ideas include activities ranging from "Jumpstart for a Day," a program aimed at literacy in at-risk preschool students, a leadership seminar and more.

In order to prepare, Brennan said the WURHA committee, the students who worked on the bid and other participants are having weekly meetings and certain chair members will be holding office hours.

According to a university news brief, the conference's central philanthropy will be The Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and monetary donations will be accepted.

"We're very excited about hosting this conference and bringing in Eau Claire's best." Brennan said.

She also said the conference will be a great way to get more students involved in groups such as the Residence Hall Association, the National Residence Hall Honorary and various hall councils.

Sophomore Alexis Wood, who is involved in RHA, said it's an excellent opportunity for students to get involved, do some service learning and work on their leadership skills.

"It's a great way to show that students really do have a say on this campus," she said.

Wood said she was surprised when they found out they had won the bid and really excited about being able to show off the campus to between 200 and 300 students from other schools. One of the major benefits of the Eau Claire campus is the idea of being able to "breathe the air" and just how nice it looks Wood said.

Brennen said, "it's a great opportunity to show off not only our leadership potential and our campus, but what we can do."
