The Shamrock Shuffle, a 5K run/walk, will be held this Sunday to support the Wisconsin Youth Sports Program. The Shuffle will start at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Post on Water Street in downtown Eau Claire and is hosted by the UW-Eau Claire Department of Recreation and Sports Facilities.
The walk is open to both teams and individuals. The deadline for team registration was Feb. 27, but individual registration is open until the day of the event.
Advance registration, which includes a $13 fee, is due by March 6. Individuals can also sign up between 9 and 10 a.m. on Sunday, with a fee of $16.
All proceeds go to the WYSP, which is a camp for those between the ages of 10 and 16 who are from economically disadvantaged families. Apart from teaching fundamental sports skills and healthy competition, the program focuses on academic areas as well.
Youth are taught the importance of education, and they learn about science, math, health and nutrition.
This year, there are a few new aspects to the Shuffle. Teams, organizations, businesses and Eau Claire residence halls will have a chance to win a party. The group with the most participants will be rewarded with sub sandwiches, pizza or barbecued chicken wings.
Additionally, there will be an ice cream drawing open to past WYSP camp participants who wear a camp shirt from a previous year.
Participants in the run/walk are asked to bring a new toothbrush to donate to the summer camp. This is for the youth, who learn about dental hygiene as part of their health education.
Long-sleeved T-shirts will be given to the members of teams that sign up for the event, and short-sleeved T-shirts will be awarded to the first 125 individuals to register.
