Women's Basketball
The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team fell just four points shy of winning the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in Stevens Point on Saturday. The team did, however, receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship tournament for the second consecutive year.
The Blugolds, currently ranked No. 12 in the nation, will face the University of DePauw (Ind.) Tigers, who are currently ranked No. 17 according to the latest D3hoops.com poll. The Tigers won the Division III title two years ago. The two teams have never played each other.
The games will be in Bloomington, Ill., at Illinois Wesleyan University. Tickets will not be sold in advance, but will be available at the door. Adult tickets will be $7 each, and student tickets are $4. Gates will open one-and-a-half hours prior to the games each night.
Track and Field
Both of the Eau Claire track and field teams will travel to UW-Stevens Point to compete in Stevens Point's Last Chance meet Saturday morning. The race will be the last race for both teams before the NCAA indoor championships in Terre Haute (Ind.).
The women's team is coming off a second place finish in the WIAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 28 and March 1 in Menomonie. The women have finished lower than second only once in the calendar year. Their third place finish in the Blugold Open on Jan. 16 is the low point thus far in the young season.
The men, on the other hand, finished below second place for the first time this semester. The fourth place finish on Saturday and the fifth place finish on Sunday in the WIAC Indoor Championships are the lowest for the team thus far.
Wrestling
Senior Josh Holforty will represent the Blugolds in Cedar Rapid, Iowa, as he competes in the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season. Holforty earned an at-large berth into the championships for the 197 pound weight class. Holforty recently finished third in the WIAC Championships.
Last season Holforty finished in sixth place in the NCAA championships when he was forced to forfeit the fifth place match to Alec Bonander of Luther College (Iowa). Holforty will get a shot at a rematch when he squares off with Bonander, who is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation and holds a top seed this year.
Women's Golf
The Eau Claire women's golf team will compete in its first event of the new year over spring break when they travel to Phoenix, Ariz. In the fall, the women took second place in the WIAC Championships.
Gymnastics
The UW-Eau Claire gymnastics team will travel to Winona, Minn., this weekend to compete in the WIAC Championships/National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCG) Regionals. Depending on how the Blugolds finish, they may qualify for NCGA nationals in St. Paul, Minn., later in March.
