While many students at UW-Eau Claire recognize the rhymes and beats of hip-hop group "Atmosphere," their Rhymesayers label mate is also gaining some local exposure.
Rapper P.O.S. is playing at 9:30 p.m. on Friday at Stones Throw, 304 Eau Claire St. P.O.S. is on his Never Better Tour and is also playing with "Sims," "Mictlan," "Lazerbreak," "Hand Over Fist" and local favorites "Frozen Tundra" and "Fathom MC."
"We've been trying to get someone who's affiliated with Ryhmesayers for a while and he's one of the up-and-coming guys," said general manager of Stones Throw Jared Bilhorn.
Bilhorn first saw P.O.S. in Madison three years ago with "Atmosphere," when P.O.S. was still only using a boom box. Today, he doesn't perform with a live band like "Atmosphere;" he just performs by himself.
Bilhorn doesn't anticipate any other artists from Rhymesayers, a Minneapolis-based record label, to perform at The Stones Throw in the near future.
"We'd love to be able to get somebody else from there," Bilhorn said. "There's a lot of talent on the label."
Sophomore Kim Gilland saw P.O.S. perform last spring in Minneapolis at the Soundset music festival in the Metrodome parking lot, which featured a lot of artists from Rhymesayers, including "Atmosphere" and "Brother Ali."
"It was a stellar performance," Gilland said. "He definitely knows how to put on a good set. It was a good show for sure." Gilland heard about P.O.S. through some of his more well-known label mates and by listening to the radio station, The Current in the Cities. When she saw one of his previous albums at the record store, Cheapo, she couldn't resist picking up a copy.
Bilhorn likes the interaction P.O.S. includes in his shows and how he keeps the audience entertained in-between songs with everything P.O.S. is about.
"He makes you feel like you're not just one of a few hundred people," Bilhorn said. "Even in some of the bigger theaters, he still manages to make a connection with the crowd."
