Students at UW-Eau Claire were given the chance to participate in 13 different events over five days last week to wash their winter blues away during the University Activities Commission's Winter Carnival.

Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 18 and ending on Sunday, Winter Carnival activities occurred all around campus and catered to many different interests. Some were more popular than others.

Sophomore Megan Kunze is one of two people on the UAC who is in charge of festivals. One of the first things she mentioned was the concert that kicked off the whole event, David Cook.

"It was nice to bring in a big name band," Kunze said. "David Cook tickets sold out in an hour on the first day that we put them on sale."

Other planned events included Dog Sledding and the Mr. Freeze Competition on Thursday, a chili feed and a comedy show on Friday, a powder puff football tournament and singer/songwriter slam on Saturday, a Rock Band tournament on Sunday and several dance parties throughout the week.

There wasn't enough snow on the ground for the dog sledding event, Kunze said, but she was excited for the various other activities that took place.

"We still had hot cocoa on the campus mall and that was a lot of fun," Kunze said.

Winter Carnival is a fairly new festival for the university, but one of its events has been around much longer, Kunze said. That event is The Rocky Horror Picture Show screening, which took place at midnight on Friday, she said.

"That's one of the most popular events that we have at Winter Carnival," Kunze said.

Sophomore Lauren Ott attended the event for the second time this year.

"'Rocky' was really fun and there was a really good turn out," Ott said. "All of the performers were really awesome."

Ott said that she planned on attending more Winter Carnival events next year.
