If at first you don't succeed...
Wednesday, Feb. 11

An officer was parked facing traffic on Water Street when he saw a silver Buick traveling eastbound with expired registration. Additionally, the vehicle's registration was suspended for an unpaid parking ticket from the city of Eau Claire. The officer followed the vehicle to Gilbert Avenue, where he pulled it over.

The officer went to the vehicle and told the driver why he pulled him over. The man said he knew of the expiration but not of the suspension. He said he knew about the parking tickets and was waiting for his tax return to register the vehicle.

The officer smelled an intoxicant and noticed the man had slurred speech along with bloodshot eyes.

The man admitted that he drank four mixed drinks with friends at a bar. The officer then asked the man to perform field sobriety tests. After the tests, the man submitted to a preliminary breath test and blew a .01. The officer thought this was incorrect after observing the man's sobriety tests. The man submitted to a second PBT and blew a .12.

The officer placed him under arrest while two other officers searched the man's car, but did not find anything of interest.

The man was transferred to a nearby hospital for a blood draw, and was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, first offense.

Friends in low places
Saturday, Feb. 14

At 2:44 a.m., an officer received a call and met with a resident assistant at Towers South regarding an intoxicated man.

The RA said there was a very drunk man in one of the rooms. The officer went to the room and met with the male occupant, who did not appear to be intoxicated. He said that he had not been drinking, but his friend who was visiting from another university had come back to the room drunk.

The visiting man was sitting on the futon and was able to hold himself up. He had a cut on his lip because he had fallen and chipped his tooth. The officer asked him some questions, and the man was able to tell the officer his first, last and middle names, among other facts about him. The man's speech was slurred, but he was coherent.

The man submitted to a preliminary breath test and blew a .28. While the officer was there, the man vomited into a bucket and drank water. The occupant of the room said he would keep an eye on the man for the rest of the morning and call the officer or 911 if anything changed.

The officer issued the man a citation for underage drinking, first offense.

At 4:35 a.m., the officer received a phone call from the occupant of the room, saying the man had suddenly passed out and had stopped responding.

The officer notified the Communication Center, and emergency response transported the man to the hospital.
