A new gadget with a slim design, large touch screen and more gadgets connected to it than a hundred Swiss Army Knives has hit the market in the last couple years.

The iPhone, the hot new gadget, is worth every penny, said junior Doug Muskett, who bought his iPhone last summer and loves it.

"It's pure awesomeness," he said, as he whipped out his phone to demonstrate how he could get on the Internet in under 30 seconds. "You can't do that, can you?"

For those who can't do what Muskett can, Eau Claire's AT&T provider, 4620 Golf Rd., sells 10 to 15 iPhones daily, according to Assistant Manager Chuck McSorley, and he added he owns one as well.

The iPhone is the most popular mobile phone in the United States, according to the NPD Group, a market research company. It surpassed the Motorola RAZR in the third quarter of 2008 as the top-selling mobile in the country.

At AT&T, the 8-Gigabyte phone runs for $199.99, while the 16-Gig costs $299.99. To those on a tight budget, it might seem hard to justify spending so much.

"I think they're a waste of money, personally," senior Kevin Spinar said. "I have a computer that can do everything an iPhone can do."

Aside from being a phone, it also works as a GPS system and MP3 player. The iPhone has thousands of applications available that could help cut down expenditures. According to the Apple Web site, there are more than 15,000 applications for the iPhone, and many of them are dedicated to saving cash.

'Spend' is an application that will track your budget for you, allowing you to see where your money is going and how much of it you have left to spend.

The lite version, which allows you to set up daily and weekly budgets, is free, while the version that allows longer-term budgets as well costs only 99 cents. Ace Budget has pretty much the same features as Spend, as does Xpense Tracker, and there are even more similar applications available with slight variations, depending on what you're looking for.
