Women's basketball
The women's basketball team traveled to UW-Oshkosh to play the Titans last night.
The Blugolds built a 13-point half-time lead, and eventually won 61-55, improving their overall record to 18-2 and their WIAC record to 10-2. Senior Heidi Arcsizewski led the Blugolds with 18 points, and sophomore Hannah Mesick added 16. Senior Missy Fremstand led the team with seven rebounds, while Arcsizewski, Mesick and junior Jodi Lindner added six rebounds each.
On Saturday, the Blugolds will travel to UW-River Falls before traveling to the University of South Dakota on Sunday to play a game that was rescheduled from Dec. 20.
Wrestling
The Eau Claire wrestling team began the new year by hosting a meet on Jan. 7 against Lawrence University and UW-Platteville in McPhee Center. The Blugolds defeated Lawrence 39-3 - their largest margin of victory on the season. Against Platteville, however, the Blugolds were unable to come away with a victory, losing 19-30.
The Blugolds rebounded with a narrow victory against Concordia (Wisc.) , 22-21, on Jan. 10. Eau Claire then traveled to Northfield, Minn., to compete against St. Olaf. The Blugolds came away victorious, 31-15.
Eau Claire then hosted the St. Cloud Huskies on Jan. 24, but lost 6-36. On Jan. 27, the Blugolds traveled to UW-La Crosse, but
lost 7-35. The Blugolds were unable to find the winning ways again last night when they traveled to UW-Oshkosh and lost 29-12.
Track and field
The Eau Claire men's and women's track and field teams have competed in three events thus far in 2009.
On Jan. 16, the teams hosted the Blugold Open. The men finished first in the four team field, while the women took third place out of six teams. On Jan. 24, both teams traveled to UW-Stevens Point. This time, it was the women who took first place, while the men finished second.
On Jan. 31, senior Rob Wilcox took first place in the 600-meter run while competing in the Warren Bolus open. Freshman Talisa Emberts took first place in the 400-meter run, senior Liz Kooistra took first place in the 600-meter run, and junior Hayley Suckow took first in the pole vault for the women.
Softball
On Jan. 28, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Preseason Top 25 poll was announced. Eau Claire, reigning national champions, were ranked No. 2 behind last season's runner-up UW-Whitewater. The softball team begins its season on March 14 in Tuscon, Arizona.
