Hundreds of UW-Eau Claire students wishing to expand their careers look for internships every year. Going somewhat away from the usual trend, a new Web site will allow employers to look for interns.
The new online service, Chippewa Valley Internship Central, is designed to help businesses create and offer more internships to local students.
The site was launched in the fall of 2008 and is sponsored by Eau Claire, Chippewa Valley Technical College, the Eau Claire School District and the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce.
"The site is more focused towards employers, especially for those who have not offered an internship before," said Sheila Miller, Chippewa Valley Internship Central Coordinator. "There is a big misconception of the hassle that goes into it … Students can always help out with back-burner projects."
A student can come in either on a full-time or a part-time basis and still be an asset to a company, Miller said. Some employers may not realize this, she added.
Jeanne Skoug, director of Career Services, said the new site is an excellent marketing tool and a "one stop" shopping place for employers, where they have a place to go if they want to hire an intern.
"To an outside employer that might be considering an intern, it can be very complex as far as to where to go," Skoug said. "We can basically take (employers) by the hand, refer them and help write position descriptions, so that it is marketed to students too."
Skoug said employers in need of an intern should visit the Web site and enter a request.

Career Services will respond to the employer, telling them whether a Eau Claire student or high school student would be most appropriate for a specific task. Career Services will then work with the employer to create job descriptions and once finished, will post the intern position on the BluGold Career Link Web site.
