While the vast majority of UW-Eau Claire students will be enjoying their break between first and second semester, the men's basketball team will be very busy.
Over the winter break the basketball team will play nine games, including the Eau Claire Holiday Classic.
The Blugolds got off to a slow start, losing two of their first three games and an exhibition match against UW-Green Bay, in which Eau Claire lost 61-92 to the division one basketball team on Sunday, Nov. 9.
The Blugolds then traveled to Wheaton, Ill., to compete in Wheaton College's Lee Pfund Classic.
In Illinois, Eau Claire first played Ohio Wesleyan, losing 78-87 on Friday, Nov. 21. On following day, the Blugolds faced the Staten Island (NY.) Yankees. The 100-67 final score gave the Blugolds their first victory of the season. The following weekend, Eau Claire traveled to Oshkosh to participate in the Oshkosh Classic.
The Blugolds first opponent was a team they had never played before, Dordt College (Neb.). Eau Claire lost the game, 74-92.
The loss dropped the Blugolds to 1-2 at the time, and paired the team with Clarke College (Iowa) on Saturday. Against Clarke College, the Blugolds built a 10 point half time lead en route to a 82-75 victory in the first ever matchup between the two teams.
The Blugolds played their first two home games the following week, this time facing Finlandia and UW-Stout. Coach Terry Gibbons recorded career win No. 200 when the Blugolds defeated Finlandia, 74-66, on Tuesday.
Eau Claire then defeated UW-Stout 77-61 on Saturday. The two victories last week improved the team's record to 4-2 overall, and the victory against Stout brought the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record to 1-0.
The Blugolds traveled to UW-Platteville yesterday, but lost 54-83.
Eau Claire returns home to play UW-La Crosse on Saturday. The game will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday in Zorn Arena. The Blugolds then have two weeks without games before returning to action on Monday, Dec. 29, at the Holliday Classic at 8 p.m. in Zorn.
Eau Claire plays the Northwestern College (Minn.) in the opening round of the classic. The winner of that game will go on to play the winner of the game between Jamestown College (N.D.) and Wartburg College (Iowa) in the championship game the next day. The two losers will play in the consolation game.
Eau Claire will then host St. Scholastica on Saturday, Jan. 3, and UW-Superior on Wednesday, Jan. 7. The match against UW-Superior starts a crucial stretch of games in which the Blugolds will play 11 consecutive games against other WIAC teams.
On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Blugolds will travel to UW-Whitewater for a game, and then to UW-Oshkosh the following Wednesday.
Later on, on Saturday, Jan. 17, the men will return home for an Alumni Day game against UW-River Falls.
Eau Claire will then play its final home game against UW-Stevens Point before the return of students on the following Wednesday.
The Blugolds will then travel to UW-La Crosse the following Saturday and Superior the Wednesday after that.
On their last season, the Blugolds finished with a record of 4-5 over winter break.
