Mascot is not necessary, but hopefully works

I see that the recent survey on establishing a mascot for the university has revealed strong support for the move.
This effort has made me think back my years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the late 1970s, when a limited effort to design a mascot resulted in the proposal of a "bluegill" as the closest approximate.
I also remember a mid-1970s Sports Illustrated article focused on Mike Ratliff and the Eau Claire basketball team, which suggested that "Blugold" sounded like an exotic strain of marijuana.
I have always prided myself on the fact that both my undergraduate and graduate institutions had team names based on colors (Blugolds and "Big Red").
Personally, I really don't think that a mascot is necessary. But it appears that the people have spoken, and I wish Eau Claire well in this endeavor.

Seriously, am I the only person who thinks the Blugold is a blue and gold macaw? It's a cool mascot. Run with it.
