Friday night the Blugolds defeated St. Thomas (Minn.) 6-0 and Saturday was much of the same as they defeated St. Mary's (Minn.) 6-2. Those two wins keep the Blugolds unbeaten early on this year and they are now 5-0.
"It's obviously nice to have a good start but we play for the conference and we play for the end of the year," head coach Matt Loen said. "We're playing good right now, hopefully we're playing good at the end of the year."
Friday night the Blugolds faced a tough St. Thomas team that was ranked fifth in the nation in the USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll. The Blugolds were not even ranked in the poll, nor did they receive a single vote.
Neither team scored in a back-and-forth first period, where there weren't very many scoring chances. But just over three minutes into the second period the Blugolds took advantage on a power-play. Senior defenseman Greg Petersen scored on a perfect one-timer from the blue line. Senior forward Sean Garrity fed him the nice pass to give the Blugolds the early lead.
The next goal came while the referee's arm was in the air to call a penalty on the Tommies. The Blugolds didn't need the penalty though, as junior Joe Bluhm put one home to give the Blugolds a 2-0 lead. The Blugolds scored two more goals in the second period outburst and held a 4-0 lead going into the third period.
"Goals are coming. It's just good to see," Garrity said. "We dominated the game up to that point and we just got a few to finally go our way and pumped a couple home."
Eau Claire put the game away midway through the third period when senior forward Jesse Vesel scored to take a 5-0 lead. Bluhm would add his second goal of the night as he finished the scoring on the night.
