Loyal opposition attitude should be present on campus

With election day less than two weeks away, I think students on campus need to be reminded of a concept I learned about four years ago in a political science class; the concept of loyal opposition. Being a supporter of Sen. McCain, I have come to realize that he will most likely come out on the losing end. However, while I am a supporter of McCain, and frequently disagree with his opponent, I will back Sen. Barack Obama if he does become President because my belief is that we all have an obligation to support the leader of our country. That is loyal opposition.

The sad thing is, you don't see a whole lot of loyal opposition on campus. I have seen McCain-Palin signs being kicked over and black spray-paint covering our footbridge that read "McCain loves penis." Whoever has conducted those actions should spend less time focusing on politics and more time re-evaluating their morals and values.

My hope is that we have all seen and felt the negative effects of being such a divided nation. Narrowing that gap is the number one change that needs to take place. That gap cannot be narrowed by simply hearing both candidates calling for change and voting for one of them. However, it can be narrowed by practicing loyal opposition. If McCain does not manage to pull off a victory that would be similar to the 1980 Miracle on Ice, I will fulfill my obligation to support the leader of our country and I encourage all Americans to do the same.
