"I think we did really well," Maurer said after the tournament, adding the team's lead after 36 holes despite its youth was impressive. "It was a pretty good tournament overall."

The team had to endure the season with a young roster. Ten of the team's 12 roster spots were filled by freshmen this year, and Ives, was the team's oldest golfer.

Ives said Eau Claire's young roster gave other teams "a bit of a shock" with its strong opening play in the tournament, but Maurer said that youth may have been the team's Achilles heel, explaining that a lack of experience - not the inclement weather - may have done the team in.

"I think more or less we were tired," Maurer said.

Eau Claire has traditionally finished well in the tournament championship. The Blugolds finished fourth last season but have taken first or second place every other year since 1996.

Stevens Point has usually been a middle-of-the-pack finisher in the conference tournament, but claimed its second consecutive first place finish this weekend.
