The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team maintained its almost-spotless season last night with a 2-1 road win over Macalester College (Minn.).
The Blugolds moved to 10-0-2 with the win - nearly as impressive as last year's 11-0-1 start - and improved its all-time record against Macalester to 3-8-1.
Macalester was first on the scoreboard with a shot in just the first 12 minutes, but remained quiet for the next 80 minutes.
Senior Liz Kooistra answered the early Macalester goal 20 minutes afterward, as sophomore Gina Christenbury assisted a shot to even the score. Kooistra assisted a second-half goal by sophomore Jamie Schiessel more than 30 minutes later to secure the Blugolds' first lead of the game.
Both teams then stayed quiet for the last 30 minutes to preserve the 2-1 Blugold win.
Macalester's offense was limited to just seven shots (four on goal), while Eau Claire tallied 11 shots and five on goal.
The win helps maintain the Blugolds' momentum coming into this weekend's pair of matches against UW-Whitewater and Carleton College (Minn.). Last night's game also gives Macalester its worst season-opening record since 2002, when the team went 5-4 in its first nine games.
Eau Claire will host Whitewater (5-5-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m. The team will hit the road on Sunday for a 2 p.m. road match against Carleton.
The Blugolds' have won three straight games against Whitewater and hold a 16-2-1 all-time record against the WIAC opponent. Eau Claire has also won nine of the last 10 matches against Carleton and boasts a 13-3-1 all-time record against the Minnesota team.
