Student Senate voted 23-0 Monday to establish a committee aimed at increasing attendance at Blugold athletic events.
Despite "the high number of accomplishments that our athletics program has achieved, the attendance at most athletic events is fairly low," Senate stated in a resolution to create the new committee. The committee will research why attendance is low and then make recommendations to draw more students to games, according to the resolution.
Senators Adam Sorelle and Dan Gawronski, two of the three senators who submitted the resolution Monday night, said they're not sure yet how large the committee will be. Sorelle said he hopes to start holding committee meetings in Davies Center as early as next week and begin gathering input from students soon to determine why more people aren't attending games.
"We want input from anybody," Sorelle said, adding the committee will be open to senators, athletes and students. "If anybody wants to join, that would be awesome," he said.
Funding for the committee likely won't be an issue, Sorelle said, who explained that the committee's main goal will simply be to research the issue.
"If we do need funds," Gawronski added, "we have that on the side already."
Sorelle said the committee may look at working with the residence halls to increase on-campus promotions of athletic events, and Gawronski suggested offering other activities during games, such as tailgates or fund raisers, to draw in more students. But both senators said the committee won't decide on what actions to take until discussions with students and athletes reveal the possible causes for the lacking attendance numbers.
"I would love to see more students at games this winter already," Gawronski said. "There's little things that could be done to get that happening already, so I don't see any reason we can't get that going right away."
