The UW-Eau Claire men's golf team competed in the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Collegiate Inviataional on Sunday and Monday.
The event, played at the Eau Claire Country Club, was the only home event for the Blugolds this season.
On the first day of the tournament, the men finished in the bottom half of the competition. Their 316 strokes placed them ahead of Edgewood College and into ninth place of 15 teams.
The front running UW-Stout team finished only 18 strokes ahead of the Blugolds, with 298 strokes. Sophomore Ryan Grip led the way for the Blugolds when he shot a 76, five strokes over par, and seven strokes behind the leader.
On the second day of the competition, the Blugolds finished in ninth place again.
The 329 shot by the Blugolds raised their total for the Invitational to 645.
Edgewood College, the team that finished behind the Blugolds after day one, leapfrogged the Blugolds and took eighth place, but only outshot the Blugolds by three strokes.
St. John's University (Minn.) finished in first place, taking 38 fewer strokes than the Blugolds.
It was freshman Jake Brookshaw who led the way for the Blugolds on day two with 81 strokes.
Sophomore Loren Churness and freshman K.R. Rucker both shot 82 on the day, finishing with scores of 161 and 163 respectively. Finishing with a tie for 33rd place, Grip was the highest overall finisher for the Blugolds.
"None of us played well at all," Rucker said. "We threw away tons of shots … inside of 100 yards."
The Blugolds will travel to St. Peter, Minn., to compete in the Gustavus Adolphus Twin Cities Classic. The event takes place from Saturday, Sept. 27, to Monday, Sept. 29.
"If we play well we know we have a good chance to win," Rucker said. "Because we have tons of talent."
