Lots of windows, plenty of seating, "warm" colors and an emphasis on green initiatives were what Student Senate members said they want in the university's future student center.
Senate held a special meeting Monday night with representatives from Bray/Burt Hill, the engineering firm hired to draw up plans for the ongoing Davies Center remodeling project. The representatives showed the senators pictures of student union buildings on other college campuses and asked the senators to talk about what features they liked and didn't like about each building.
The discussion seemed to uncover a desire for a student center that fuses modern and traditional design elements and that would blend in among the campus' other buildings. Senators at the meeting said they were drawn to designs that featured natural lighting and windows, as well as buildings that allowed for both indoor and outdoor seating.
A mix of multipurpose rooms and quiet areas to study were also on the senators' wish lists, as were vaulted ceilings, "warm" interior colors and an improved bookstore layout.
Improvements to the current movie theater and additional computers were also desires among senators.
"It's something that students will remember when coming here either on a visit or their orientation," Senator Dan Gawronski said about what he thought the new student center should embody.
Following the preliminary planning and input phase, Bray/Burt Hill will draw up blueprints and follow that with construction. Representatives at Monday's meeting said they are hoping for building occupancy by 2012.
