Students looking for help or those with questions regarding their career will no longer need to walk into Schofield Hall for assistance. Starting next week, Career Services will launch an online chat service called "Career Chat" for students with career-related questions.
The service will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays throughout the semester.
"We are very excited about the new service," said Erin Leifker, the project manager of the service and Career Service Outreach Manager. "I'm very passionate about it."
Using online instant messaging, students can ask career counselors almost any question pertaining to careers. This includes questions about jobs offered in a particular major, networking events, concerns and résumé issues, Leifker said.
"We launched the service because we found that there was more demand by students than we had time for," said junior James Hollman, an associate coordinator for Student Services. "It is a way we can be available to students beyond the office so students don't have to make appointments."
Leifker said the service is a different type of resource available for students, at a time convenient for them.
"It's a good starting point for someone who might be intimidated or unable to physically come into the office on campus," she said.
The main goal of the service is to provide an option for students to get assistance inside their own home, Leifker said.
"It is important for us to go to students and where they are," she said.
Hollman added that they want to be more available for career decisions and anything that deals with professional development for students.
Establishing the times for the chat service was researched extensively, as well as implementing the project overall. The idea was brought up in the middle of last year, Leifker said.
"James (Hollman) did a great job and conducted a lot of the research regarding student polls and needs," she said. "It is good to have a student involved because it's easy to stay in touch with students through a student."
