In 10 of the past 13 years a varying number of UW-Eau Claire students were housed in a nearby hotel. The same will happen this fall.

There is room for 3,905 students in the university's residence halls, but this fall there are about 130 extra students, Charles Major, UW-Eau Claire director of Housing and Residence Life, said in a university press release.

The Plaza Hotel, 1202 W Clairemont Ave, will house the additional students for the fall semester. About 60 of these students are returning residents who volunteered to live in alternative housing. The main purpose of asking students to live in the hotel was to avoid forcing freshmen to live off campus, said Major.

Students in the hotel will have all campus services available to them, including an added city bus stop. A university sh uttle will run students on and off campus after the busses stop for the day.

Likely, all of these students will be housed in residence halls come spring semester, said major.

Over the last 25 years, the need to house students in alternative locations has risen several times.
