Her Fulbright research will continue previous work she did with colleagues in Chile, including visits to local schools, as well as working with Chilean graduate students in their efforts to re-vamp the failed system.
Pastrana said two of her three kids will join her in Chile, possibly along with her husband. The entire family is fluent in Spanish, she added, so language won't be an issue.
When she returns to Eau Claire, Pastrana said she will complete several book chapters about her findings. She hopes to apply her research toward creating a more holistic approach to education, rather than making schools compete through test scores.
"We need to make a commitment to public education (in the United States)," she said.
But no matter the research topic or the corner of the globe they concentrate their research, all four Eau Claire Fulbright Scholars represent the university and will bring back their experiences to share with students.
"It's a great honor … for the university," Tallant said. "These four faculty members are going to be serving as ambassadors."
