Junior receives scholarship to study in China

After receiving a $2,000 scholarship, a UW-Eau Claire junior is studying in China this semester. Heather Sommer is studying at Huawen Xueyuan, the campus extension of Jinan University at the College of Chinese Language and Culture in Guangzhou, China, thanks to the Freeman Award.
Sommer is an English major with a minor in language studies. She plans to study the Mandarin language and Chinese culture. She has also been able to go on several field trips, including the famous five ram statue in Guangzhou.
The Freeman Foundation is a private philanthropic foundation, dedicated to help expand an understanding between the United States and East Asian countries.
Sommer hopes to graduate from UW-Eau Claire with an English major and an emphasis in creative writing and volunteer abroad teaching English in China.
As a service to the community, The Spectator publishes upcoming events. Events must be submitted to The Spectator office by 5 p.m. Monday for the Thursday issue and 3 p.m. Friday for the Monday issue and will be published as space allows.
