"Hopefully people will be able to work through it together," Zander said. "It's not easy, quitting."
Zander said he is an ex-smoker who quit over a year ago for health reasons.
At the first meeting, Borman said a doctor will discuss nicotine-replacement strategies. At another meeting, the coordinators will bring in the Student Advocacy Team, a peer-based group through SHS. The group will head to Action City, 2800 Lorch Ave., at its third meeting and will conclude the four-week session with evaluation and feedback.
Borman said participants will shape how the group progresses after the pilot program finishes. In the future, the series could be longer or shorter, depending on students' response.
"We're definitely looking for feedback," Broman said. "We're looking for critical thinkers."
There is no cost to participate in the program, but space is limited, so students should contact Zander to reserve a spot, he said.
Borman said the decision to quit smoking can't be forced, since a person must want to do it for themselves.
"That's a personal decision," she said, "And we really don't want to make that for everybody."
Zander agreed.
"(People) aren't going to quit unless they really want to," he said. "If people want to, hopefully I can help them."
