Positive, negative relationships affect mental, physical health

An unhealthy relationship is just that - unhealthy.
Unhealthy relationships give negative feedback to the individuals involved, numbing their ability to enjoy life, Harlon Heinz, director of Heinz Psychological Services, 826 S. Hastings Way, said.
"Your self-esteem suffers, your view of the world is more negative, you're more depressed and … problems that you have are generally enhanced," Heinz said. "Anytime you're more anxious or depressed, you're … prone to manifest other problems."
Luckily, Heinz said a healthy relationship does just the opposite and can even offer a wider variety of benefits.
Patricia Fedie, a licensed social worker for Caillier Clinic, 505 S. Dewey St., said relationships have obvious psychological benefits.
"As far as emotionally goes, to feel loved and know that you're loved, you're more likely to take care of yourself knowing that someone else needs you or wants you around," Fedie said.
Sophomore Chelsea Anderson said being in a relationship helps her strive for the best in life.
"I feel like the person that I'm with right now is the person that I'm meant to be with, so it gives me a reason to look forward to every day," she said, adding she works hard at school to create the best future possible.
"I want to put together the best life for us that I can," she said.
Committed relationships help people realize the good in the world, Heinz said, adding that living with the person, and therefore having somebody to share your life with, brings about benefits whether the couple is married or not.
"There can be long-term homosexual relationships that I think offer the same thing as male-female relationships," he said.
Heinz said overall it's beneficial to be able to discuss things with someone. The closer the people are, the more personal the topics.
"When you discuss things, you get a chance to clarify your own thinking - it helps you to organize your thoughts," he said.
