Junior Michelle Fredricks spends about four to eight hours in her car a week to get to and from work, filing up her gas tank about once a month, she said. Last semester she needed her car to travel for class as well. As an education major, Fredricks was required to observe in area middle school and high school classrooms, she said.

"(We) carpooled, but the university just assumed that everyone had a car," she said.

Fredricks agreed that a gas tax increase is inappropriate, but thinks a toll way system could be effective because people don't necessarily drive on highways everyday.

"If I'm not going to drive on the highway (everyday), I wouldn't mind (tolls)," she said.

Both Janssen and Fredricks agreed that an increase would affect them financially.

"I'm highly opposed (to the increase), I can't afford gas as it is," Fredricks said, adding that an increase would greatly affect the amount she would drive her car.

Janssen said that she would stop driving her car as much despite an increase, however.

"I don't drive anymore than I have to drive," she said. "It'd just be one more thing to budget and plan for."
