Although the UW-Eau Claire gymnastics team took last place during Sunday's meet at California State University in Fullerton, Cal., head coach Jean DeLisle said it's all right.
Since the meet featured three NCAA Div. I teams, DeLisle said just competing against them proved to be a good experience.
"Our priority going out there was not to necessarily win or anything," she said. "Sometimes it's beneficial to go against Div. I. You see a different caliber, and it kind of makes you hungry for that same caliber."
The Blugolds scored 176.525 for fourth place. UCLA took first place, Cal State Fullerton took second and Brown University took third.
Sophomore Samantha Howard said she's happy with the score.
"We had a few low points, but overall we did really well," Howard said, adding they did six points better than their first meet where they placed third out of four. "We had a good energy, good performance overall, and really no complaints whatsoever."
The top Blugold finisher was junior Anna Sutherland, taking eighth all-around with a score of 35.275.
The next meet is Friday against Gustavus Adolphus at UW-Stout, and freshman Kerri Ritsche said she hopes the team works off its nerves during the next few events.
"We go out there and are a little shaky," she said. "Otherwise, everyone's really going all the way. I'm really proud of all the girls."
