Blakelee's Chocolates & Sweet Things
416 Water St.
McLean Bennett
Issue date: 12/13/07 Section: Scene
From the very moment I stepped into Blakelee's Chocolates & Sweet Things, my molars and bicuspids knew they were in for a rough day.
That's because what meets the eyes upon entering the almost brand new chocolate shop is like a scene from a toned-down version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." It's that sweet.
A whole cornucopia of goodies and treats - the types of foods our mothers always warned us about - line the walls of this store in all their sugar-filled glory.
Chocolate-covered gummy bears, peppermints, sugar-coated jellies and a glorious hodgepodge of taffies - the things that occupy almost every kid's dreams - fill the store in barrel-sized drums and football-sized jars.
Now, while I am not a huge fan of all things candy-related, I must say that on this particular day I had a particularly strong itching for a bit of chocolate. A lot of chocolate.
So to the chocolate section I immediately headed, but with so many great-tasting chocolates to choose from, I couldn't decide on just one or two flavors.
I eventually went with a few small bags of chocolate-covered espresso beans, to which I added a small satchel of chocolate-coated pretzels and some pumpkin-flavored malt balls.
Going with a somewhat small budget, though, and knowing my dentist would already be scolding me, I decided to add just a few more things to my grocery list. I snatched a few Bit-O-Honeys, a handful of caramels and a healthy helping of Mary Janes. Yes, I can now tell my friends that I bought Mary Jane on Water Street, and actually be telling the truth!
Upon approaching the checkout counter, my eyes fell upon a whole new chocolate utopia - er, chocolatopia - along the back wall of the store were two glass-encased enclaves of chocolate perfection. I had found what I came looking for.
A whole assortment of goodies sat there just out of my reach (darn you, glass case), but I eventually asked for what seemed the most exotic of the offerings - chocolate-coated orange peels. Sounds gross, but it's not.
