The Spectator spoke with Colleges Against Cancer President Katie Youngblut, a senior.
What is Colleges Against Cancer?
It's a branch of the American Cancer Society. We hold events to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society throughout the year. We also advocate for cancer-related legislation and celebrate cancer survivors.
What kinds of activities does Colleges Against Cancer do?
Every April, we organize Relay for Life, which takes place at McPhee Center. We raised about $50,000 for the American Cancer Society last year. Today, we'll have activities on the Campus Mall for the Great American Smoke Out, as well as a block party at the Goat Coffee House from 4 to 7 p.m. tonight. We have also made cards for kids in children's hospitals in the Twin Cities and sold T-Shirts for Breast Cancer Awareness Week.
How does someone get involved?
Anyone can come to our meetings, which are at 8 p.m. every other Tuesday. E-mail Youngbult at youngbkl@uwec.edu for more information. You can also volunteer or start a team for Relay for Life.
