A stalled state budget leaves students with nothing to do but write, call and lobby legislators and plan a rally on the steps of the Capitol, Student Senate members said Monday.

In an attempt to urge students to take part in these efforts, Student Senate unanimously passed a resolution Monday night called "In Support of Students' Efforts To Ensure A Student Friendly State Budget."

Almost four months after the July 1 deadline, the Legislature passed the budget Tuesday, but if it had not been settled by Nov. 1, UW System students could have faced a nearly $800 tuition hike for the spring semester, according to the resolution.

Since February, students have been involved in United Council's Wisconsin Needs Higher Education Reinvestment campaign, which Senate supports, according to the resolution.

Students planned a Wednesday protest on the steps of the state Capitol to make their plea to legislators, but cancelled the rally once the budget passed both Houses Tuesday night.

"Students have recognized the importance of their involvement in the budget process for the future," according to the resolution. "(Senate) recognizes, appreciates, and supports the efforts of all students, on behalf of students, to ensure a student friendly state budget."

Eau Claire's U.C. Delegation Leader Elizabeth Schinke supported the resolution.

"I think the vast majority of students have shown that they are interested," Schinke said. "Obviously this is what our students want."
