Student Senate Vice President Meghan Charlier, a member of the Davies Committee, said she would like to gather as much input from students as possible, especially from underclassmen, who she said will be around to take advantage of the new facility.
"I really want to make sure … students are involved in every step of the process," Charlier said, adding there still needs to be "a lot of behind-the-scenes work" before the project comes close to being complete.
All five legislators in the Eau Claire area voted in favor of the budget, with representatives from both sides of the aisle, giving up some of what they wanted.
"The alternative could be much worse than what we finally settled for," said Rep. Terry Moulton, R-Chippewa Falls. "I looked at it as we got to get this budget done, and compromise is the only way we're going to do it."
Rep. Jeff Smith, D-Eau Claire, agreed.
"The people who voted yes were willing to give up on some things … but in the end this budget needed to (be) passed," Smith said. "I am very thrilled that we all regionally voted yes."
Both Smith and Moulton said a new Davies Center, as well as the increased funding for the nursing program and NanoSTEM initiative, will also create an economic boom for the Eau Claire area.
"The Davies Center, which I was fighting to get … that will have an economic impact on the community because it will employ a number of people to construct the facility," Moulton said. "Plus it will enable the university in recruiting people."
Smith agreed.
"We want to grow not only the UW System and UW-Eau Claire but also the Chippewa Valley."
