The UW-Eau Claire women's cross country team continues to roll through its season, while the men's team is still finding its way following Saturday's Drews/Neubauer Invite, held in West Salem.
The women ran to the top of the event's lineup and improved to 93-16 on the season, while the men registered near the middle of the meet's lineup, moving to 52-55.
Women's team
The women took third place out of 27 teams on Saturday, making the Blugolds the highest-placing Div. III women's team at the event.
Junior Mary Palmer took first for the Blugolds with a time of 22:37 minutes, finishing No. 10 overall. Senior Molly Warner was not far behind; placing No. 13 overall, running the course in 22:48. In third for the 'Golds was junior Beth Lutz, who finished with a time of 22:50. Lutz took No. 15 overall.
"They're always up in our top - Palmer, Warner, Lutz," Schwamberger said. "I'm very happy with how they ran, all three of them."
Lutz, the top runner in the last couple of meets, had just come back from an injury, Schwamberger said, adding she's had time to recover.
"For our women in general, it was a very good day," Schwamberger said.
Men's team
The men placed 14th out of 25 teams at the Invite. Host UW-La Crosse took first.
Junior Kevin Hall came out on top for the Blugolds with a time of 26:58, putting him at No. 72 overall.
"Kevin's been our leader throughout the year," Schwamberger said. "He just felt a little bit flat."
Sophomore Chris Wirtz followed Hall with a time of 27:03, finishing No. 75 overall.
Junior Tony Carr placed third for the Blugolds, 111th overall, with a time of 27:37.
"It was my best performance in college to date," Carr said. "I'd have to say it went pretty well for me."
Schwamberger agreed.
"Tony's really had a good year," he said. "He's been very consistent for us, which has been exciting."
Schwamberger said he hopes that the team will come together and perform well at the conference meet in two weeks.
"We definitely have some things to work on," Schwamberger said. "There were some positives, there were some negatives, and it's nice that we have two weeks to work on them."
