Senior quarterback Mitch Schaeuble runs a play during the Oct. 6 Homecoming game against UW-La Crosse. The Blugolds lost Saturday 27-20 at UW-River Falls.

On Saturday the UW-Eau Claire football team faced UW-River Falls, a team Eau Claire has defeated five consecutive times.

The Blugolds couldn't hold onto this game, however, losing 27-20.

"Players played hard," Coach Todd Glaser said. "Unfortunately we fell short."

Senior Tony Hull said he thought the team played poorly and the players didn't make any big plays.

The loss dropped Eau Claire's WIAC record to 2-2 and overall record to 5-2. The Falcons improve to 1-2 in the WIAC and 2-4 overall.

The Blugolds held an early lead as sophomore running back Cory Sartorelli gained 48 yards on the first drive to get to the Falcons' 22-yard line. From there, senior quarterback Mitch Schaeuble connected with senior receiver Chris Hull for a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Later, River Falls punted to junior Craig Polifka, who made it to the 36 before fumbling to the Falcons, which set River Falls up for a 30-yard field goal.

After scoring a field goal early in the second quarter, the Falcons took the lead after River Falls' running back Nathan Anderson rushed for a touchdown with about eight minutes left in the half. The Falcons added a two-point conversion to go up 14-7.

In the third quarter the Falcons scored off a 20-yard run from their quarterback.

The Blugolds came back, though, as Schaeuble threw to senior Chris Hull for a 63-yard touchdown play on the following possession to narrow the gap to 21-14..

In the fourth quarter, the Blugolds constructed a 66-yard drive on 12 plays before sophomore running back Spencer Kehoe scored a touchdown. The Falcons blocked the extra point try, eliminating the Blugolds' chances to tie and keeping the score at 21-20.

With only 1:33 to play, the Blugolds tried an onside kick, but the Falcons recovered it and turned it into a 41-yard touchdown, putting them up 27-20.

It was the Falcons' Homecoming game, and Tony Hull said that played in the Falcons' favor, giving them extra motivation.

The Blugolds will play at home Saturday at 1 p.m. against WIAC opponent UW-Platteville.

"I'm exited for next week's game," Tony Hull said. "We need to figure out our strength for defense and play like any other week. We need to figure out what we can do and get the job done. We hope to finish the season strong."
