The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team finished out its regular season Saturday with a 6-3 victory over UW-La Crosse at McPhee Center.

The win improved Eau Claire's record to 14-4 overall, including an 8-3 record in dual matches and a 5-1 record in conference play. The Blugolds finished the regular season in second place in the WIAC heading into the conference tournament, which is set to begin Oct. 20.

"It was the first time we beat La Crosse in four years," coach Craig Monson said. "We didn't play the best we have played all year, but we played good enough to win."

Eau Claire started the day winning two of three doubles matches. Sophomore Brenna McCormick and senior Kristie Carlson won their No. 2 match 8-6, while the tandem of senior Liz Deprey and sophomore Erin Welch had an 8-5 victory in the No. 3 spot.

"Starting off with those two wins in doubles makes it easier to play singles, knowing that you have a couple of points already," Carlson said. "Everyone did really well."

Monson echoed some of Carlson's statements, saying the doubles teams came out strong Saturday.

"The three doubles teams played one of the better matches they have played this year," he said.

The Blugolds won four of six singles matches, with all four coming in straight sets. Senior Sarah Riordan won her No. 1 singles match in sets of 6-1 and 6-4.

McCormick took her No. 4 singles match in sets of 6-3 and 6-2 while No. 5 Welch won 6-4 and 6-1. Deprey took her No. 6 match in sets of 6-2 and 6-4.

The Blugolds' focus will now shift to Saturday, when they start the two-day WIAC conference tournament in Madison. The team will enter in second place behind UW-Whitewater.

"The win puts us in second all alone," Monson said. "We're sitting pretty good entering the tournament."

Carlson said the Blugolds are confident heading into this weekend's action.

"We feel really good," she said. "Our only loss was to Whitewater. We have a couple people going into the tournament with high seeds."

La Crosse won the tournament the past two seasons, and Eau Claire took second place last year.
