Proposals for the university's first long-term strategic plan encompassed Monday night's Student Senate meeting.

UW-Eau Claire officials and students appeared before Senate to discuss their ideas and receive feedback.

Since last spring, the university has been collaboratively creating a strategic vision of what UW-Eau Claire will be in the next decade.

Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich said Monday night that strategic planning is a very importanbt part of what he is doing during his first few years at UW-Eau Claire.

"This is planning for the future," he said.

Over the summer, organizers drafted preliminary proposals of six work groups. Through these groups, the university is examining what it can improve on and also what its strengths are and is building on those strengths.

Levin-Stankevich said the final plan is still being written, but all of the input they receive will be taken into consideration.

Members of the first work group, Preparing Global Leaders, proposed that every UW-Eau Claire graduate have an international experience of some kind, such as through a service learning project or a semester abroad. Among the highlights of their proposal included an interdisciplinary global curriculum and international perspectives integrated into curriculum.

Group member senior Chris Nielson said he thinks this is an important concept.

"Experiences transform students … they turn us into adults," he said. "It takes us out of where we find ourselves … and exposes us to the world. I think this is a great idea for the future of this university."

Group 2, Transforming Learning, proposed changes to the way the curriculum is set up.

Student Senate President and group member Ray French said the group is proposing that students become more engaged in creating their curriculum.

He said students should work with their advisers and create specific goals for their education.

Members of Group 3, Serving the Public Good, focused mainly on the needs of non-traditional students, proposing a non-traditional student center.
