New director of libraries John Pollitz stands in the reference section of McIntyre Library. Pollitz said he hopes the library remains centered on students and service under his direction.

Like many others at UW-Eau Claire, John Pollitz has a Facebook account. Unlike most Facebookers though, he's not in his 20s. He is a faculty member who joined Facebook so he could be where the students are, he said.

Pollitz, the new director of libraries at UW-Eau Claire, said he has about 30 Facebook friends, but doesn't look for new friends.

"There's nothing creepier than a 55-year-old seeking out Facebook friends," he said, although he said he's always ready to accept new friend requests should they come his way.

Kati Tvaruzka, the education librarian at Eau Claire, described Pollitz, who started on Aug. 1, as funny and fun to be around.

"He's very enthusiastic about the library and its services," she said. "I think he's going to do a lot for the library and for campus."

As the director of libraries, Pollitz is the leader of the McIntyre Library. He said he helps develop policies for the library and provides a vision for how services will be provided in the future. Pollitz said one of his goals is to make sure the library remains centered on students and service.

"It's a wild time for libraries right now because new technology and resources are expanding," he said. "The whole landscape is changing."

Pollitz said one of the main concerns for library directors is to make sure students leave the university with information literacy.

"We hope when students graduate from Eau Claire they have a strong knowledge in their field," he said, "but also are widely educated."

Pollitz is also the copyright officer. As the copyright officer, he deals with providing information about copyrights as well as with RIAA copyright issues if they target Eau Claire again, he said.

He said one of the reasons he came to Eau Claire was to have more interaction with students, which he didn't have at his previous job at Oregon State University, a school over two times larger than UW-Eau Claire.
