Sprick said handling such a situation would require a lot of effort on the part of officers and emergency personnel to do everything from mobilizing medical care to setting up a command post and assisting with crowd control.

"Police would focus on the crime scene management and operation of the investigation itself," he said. "And to, of course, make sure we were communicating with family members and friends of the victims and offering support systems for them."

The department would also work with university administrators to determine whether or not to cancel classes or to shut down the university, Sprick said.

As far as what students, faculty or staff members should do if they find themselves in the event of a shooting or similar dangerous situation, Sprick had the following advice:

"I would suggest that people would take cover," Sprick said, explaining people should stay away from windows and to get behind a solid substance, such as a cement block wall.

"Get behind something that would stop a bullet, at least until information came that suspects were in custody," he said. "It's not a time for people to be curious."
