Instead of partying on Water Street Friday night, senior Alec Foss will be running and walking 320 laps - 40 miles - around the McPhee indoor track with the goal of raising $1,000 to support finding a cure for cancer.

Hundreds of other participants will join Foss for the annual Relay for Life, a 12-hour event hosted by UW-Eau Claire's chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, in partnership with the American Cancer Society.

Unlike Foss, most runners switch off with other team members throughout the night in relay style, Colleges Against Cancer co-chair and senior Chelsea Budzisz said.

"We'll see how far I can go," Foss said. "I'm not going to quit until I definitely have to. I don't want to let anyone down and I want to raise as much money as I can."

Foss said he is running in memory of Kim Wee, an old friend and classmate from his hometown of Rice Lake, who died in December from leukemia.

Registration for the Relay of Life begins at 5:45 p.m. Friday in the annex between McPhee Center and the Ade Olson Addition. Registration fees are $10 per person to cover the costs of T-shirts and facility rental.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with the official cancer survivors' lap around the track.

A luminaria ceremony will begin at 9:30 p.m. The lit paper bags will line the McPhee indoor track to remember deceased cancer patients and honor survivors. Individuals can dedicate luminarias for a minimum donation of $5 by contacting Maria Froehle at froehlmc@uwec.edu.

A tribute to Eberth Alarcon, a UW-Eau Claire math professor who lost a battle to leukemia in September, 2006, will begin at 10 p.m. Math professor and colleague Marc Goulet will speak in Alarcon's memory.

Eau Claire's goals are to have 70 participating teams, five faculty teams and to raise $55,000. Colleges Against Cancer co-chair and senior Jessica Kesterson said they have met their overall team goal, are halfway in their fundraising goal and hope to meet the $55,000-mark when participants bring funds Friday evening.
