A UW-Eau Claire senior is one of 25 students nationwide selected to participate in a prestigious business internship program in Germany this summer.
Kate Klocke, a double major in German and business administration, said she was selected to participate in the Transatlantik Program in late November of last year. The program is offered through the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest.
"I hope to learn more about the German culture and how it translates into a business setting," she said of her internship.
Klocke will be in Germany from June 1 to November 30, where she said she will be interning with one of a number of German businesses over the course of the summer.
"I want to improve my German speaking skills while I'm there," Klocke said, adding she is excited at the prospect of learning to live on her own in a foreign country.
This is the fourth time in the past three years that a student from Eau Claire has been selected for the internship, according to a university press release.
Chair of the foreign language department Johannes Strohschänk, who teaches German for business courses, said the internship will provide Klocke an opportunity to become not only bilingual, but also bicultural.
"She will hone her cultural knowledge of the German business climate," he said. "She'll be able to function independently in any given business environment."
Among the companies that have been part of the program in the past are Siemens and Adidas, Strohschänk said.
Klocke said she has been studying German for a total of seven years - four years in college and three in high school. She also studied abroad in Germany at the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 2005.
Klocke said she expects to graduate in May 2008. While she is not completely sure what she will do after graduation, she said she definitely wants to do something that involves the German language in the workplace.
"I'd like to get a job that combines business and German," she said.
Strohschänk had high praise for Klocke, saying her dedication and discipline in learning German was the reason she was chosen for the internship.
"She is representative of what we like to see in Eau Claire graduates," he said.
